An overwhelmed person who can't deal with her clutter.

Our homes are filled with belongings, and often times they are things we don’t use or don’t even like. The way to happiness in a well-functioning home is to ensure you don’t have a bunch of stuff that serves no purpose.

Obligation

Do you keep things out of a sense of obligation? Cut that out today. There is no reason to keep things you don’t want or need. Hanging onto belongings because your favorite aunt left them to you or because it was a wedding gift leads to clutter.

Fear

Are you afraid of throwing something away and needing it later? Let it go if you have something for a year and haven’t needed it. Saving things you might need in the future is simply adding to your clutter.

Anxiety

Psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter says, “Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed.” Clutter can also inhibit your creativity and productivity. The accumulation of too much stuff can overstimulate your system and all your senses, adding to anxiety.

Where is it?

Do you spend time every day looking for things you can’t find? When there are a lot of paper piles, it’s much harder to find what you need when you need it. The disorganization steals your precious time and frustrates you at the same time.

Letting go

Letting go can be difficult, but once you begin, you will find it freeing. Give yourself a pep talk as you work. Take small steps and work a little area at a time. With each small victory, you’ll get the boost you need to keep moving forward. If you know how to clean up, but can’t get started or you’re feeling consistently overwhelmed, it’s time to get help.
